In 1955, the C-123 was outfitted with skis and pantoons for water operations.
During flight tests at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, it was able to lift
off of the water at a speed of some 20 knots.
In 1957, the aircraft was modified to use a retractable ski system attached
to the landing gear for snow operations. These aircraft were first used
by the Strategic Air Command in Newfoundland and later transfered to the
Alaskan Air National Guard.
The C-123 was evaluated under desert conditions in 1963. A wide track
landing gear system was used to increase stability on the ground. The
YC-123H was used extensively in South Vietnam, sometimes flying into fields
as short as 880 ft.
The C-123T can easily be modified for similiar requirements.
